We first met Belinda & Jason in 2009 when they attended a ‘Keyline Farming Course’ that we led at ‘Taranaki Farm’ (Woodend, Victoria) and this coincided with them taking over a 100ha portion of Jason’s family’s sheep grazing property. With tertiary animal science and agriculture qualifications and years working in the pig industry they both wanted to raise pigs but to do so in a way that was more ‘regenerative’. In 2016, they were able to take over the balance of what now a 200ha (500ac) holding.
This is a design and development of two parts, 6 years apart, with the same focus of developing gravity-fed water storage and reticulation systems, all-weather internal access roads, tree crop integration and a KiwiTech-based water hydrants & fencing layout.
The feedback from the return on investment (ROI) and operations provided that there was no change to the planning framework for the 2017 farm plan for the adjacent 100ha parcel.
Such has been the performance of this multi-award winning farm, that in recent years the Hagan’s have added sheep & cattle grazing and in 2020 added an on-farm butchery to the mix of enterprises on what is widely recognised as the benchmark pastured pig production farm in the world.
